DIY Scratch Off Paint Valentine

I gave John his Valentine today and it was a hit!
Here's how I made it:
Supplies:
Paper
Acrylic Paint and Paint Brush
Contact Paper
Dish Soap
Scissors
Heart Punch- optional

I cut circles-- but in hindsight that was silly.
You could just write your message on your paper and save a step.
Cover your paper that you wrote your message on and cover it with contact paper.  Trim the sides.
Mix 2 parts acrylic paint with 1 part dish soap.
Paint a thin layer on your Valentine.  Wait an hour or more and paint another layer.
Repeat this until you have enough layers and the message is hidden.
I used the heart punch to make a stencil.  I painted 4 hearts to show where to scratch.  You can be creative here!  Then use a permanent marker to write another message to your sweet Valentine.
Give your sweetheart your Valentine and a coin!  Let them scratch their way to their secret message.
John's message reads "Love You For Always".
We started saying "for always" a long time ago and we had it inscribed on our wedding bands!  :)
This is a really fun project.  You can be creative and make scratch off lottery cards, love coupons, anything really!  Have fun!!  Happy Valentine's Day!!!

xoxo, Ashley

Paper Quilling: Make Some Hearts + Giveaway

Happy Friday Friends!  Guess what-- I'm offering a giveaway today at the end of this post!

Have you heard of paper quilling?  I'm so fascinated with it!  It's a craft where you roll, shape, and glue strips of paper into shapes-- and make designs with different combinations of your shapes.

Here is a chart of some basic shapes used in quilling.  The open heart would be so cute on Valentine's Cards!
You can attach two teardrop shapes to create a heart! via Martha Stewart
Follow these simple instructions to make a dozen quilled roses.
You can watch this video to learn how to make quilled roses as well.
A great tutorial: Roses and Daisies via Craft Ideas for All

You don't even need to buy a quilling tool!  Follow this tutorial to make your own Quilling Tool.

If you're interested-- here is a little about the history of quilling.  I LOVE learning about the history of crafts.  Have you read The Knitting Sutra by Susan Gordon Lydon?  Great read.  I haven't finished it, but it's got me thinking about the many generations of women (and men too) before me who crafted-- some for work, some for pleasure, some for necessity.

Have you tried quilling?  Tell me about your experiences!  I'd love to see pictures of what you have created!  You can leave comments here or tweet me @mistergandme

Valentine's Mini Pencils Tutorial

Remember when I made Mini Mushroom Pencils?  I have a LOT of golf pencils left over-- and wanted to make some fun Valentine's favors.

For this project you will need:
Golf Pencils
Wood Glue
Tiny Wood Button Caps
Paint and Paint Brush
Cup filled with sand, rice or beans

Take your tiny pencil and glue the button cap to the top.
Then place your pencil tip side down into the cup of sand, rice, or beans until the glue dries.  I left mine overnight.
After the glue dries, paint your pencils.  I painted mine red, pink, and white.
You might want to use more than one coat of paint-- the yellow pencil paint created a funny tint on my red pencils.  After the paint is dry-- you can paint hearts, x's and o's, spell L,O,V,E, or whatever tickles your fancy on the button caps.
Let your hearts dry and then you can tuck a few into your Valentines!

Happy painting!

xoxo,
Ashley
